EDU 3217 - Teaching the Language of Drama is a new subject to be learn for this semester. we have to study five plays; Antigone by Sophocles, King Lear by William Shakespeare, Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennesse William and Anike- a version of Sophocles' Antigone by Wong Phui Nam. Before proceed with any of the plays, our lecturer - Dr. Edwin, gives a brief introduction about theatre in order for us to get the view of what theatre is. He starts with the Overview of the History of Theatre. Here, he explains about the Greek Theatre, Roman Theatre and Medieval Theater. Each of the period shows the emergence of the theatre, from tragedy to comedy and to tragicomedy. In my prior knowledge, I read about the Greek and Shakespeare in general and found out there are other plays such as Roman theatre. This subject is consider to be my first study on play which consists of classic and modern plays.
There are two plots of theatre that are dramatic plot structure introduced by Aristotle while epic plot structure introduced by Bretch. The Aristotlelian plot is more on emotions which I think more touchable and have more impact on the audience emotions whereas the Brechtian focus more on intellect aspect. Furthermore, the protagonist relationship in Aristotelian plot deals with himself or God whereas the Brechtian deals with the society and more issues can be presented.
The ancient theatre is unique because there are no women actresses involve at all. During the era, women are not allowed to perform according to their law. Instead of that, the male actor has to act as a woman and they acted well. If I have the chance to watch the play, I might been tricked by him.
